Appointment System

The surgery operates an appointment only system. Appointments to see the doctor or practice nurse team can be made by telephoning 762424, or asking at the reception desk. We are also able to offer Internet booking, please enquire at reception about applying to use this facility.

Phone lines open at 8.15 and can be very busy, unless your appointment is needed for an immediate consultation on the day please phone or call at the surgery after 10am. The practice operates a telephone queuing system, and our receptionist will answer your call as quickly as possible. The majority of appointments are now bookable up to 2 weeks in advance.Same day appointments are available for patients with problems that are urgent. Please be aware that a telephone call/consultation may be offered as an alternative to an appointment on the day. Branch surgery appointments can either be booked by phoning the main surgery at Penistone on 762424, or contacting the branch surgeries during the branch opening times.

Please be prepared to give our staff information that will help them assess the urgency of your request for an appointment/visit/advice.

If you are unable to attend your appointment for any reason, please contact us as soon as you can so that it can be offered to another patient. If more than one family member needs to be seen, please make separate appointments for each person.

People who repeatedly fail to keep appointments without notifying us and without good reason will receive a letter of warning. Appointments are valuable to us and to those who need them. The ultimate sanction for repeatedly missing appointments is removal from the Practice list.

Emergencies

If you feel that you have a medical problem that cannot wait and there are no appointments left, you will be offered an emergency slot. The receptionist will ask for brief details to pass onto the duty doctor so they can prioritise your appointment request. Sick notes are not a medical emergency and may be refused for the Emergency surgery.

If you feel you or a member of you family has a very serious medical emergency and you are unable to get through to the practice on the phone, please consider phoning 999.

Triage and Telephone Advice

We offer telephone consultations as some patients find this a convenient alternative to attending the practice. The receptionist will ask you if your problem can be dealt with on the phone. If you agree, a telephone appointment will be booked and the duty doctor will telephone you back. Please make sure that you are available to take the call. Telephone consultations are usually taken before 10.30am.

Home Visit Requests

Home visit requests are taken before 10.30am. Requests after this time are only accepted if it is very urgent.

When you phone, the receptionist will ask you for some brief details to enable the doctor to prioritise the calls. The doctor may phone you back to discuss this further.

Please do not ask a doctor to call unless you are too unwell or disabled to leave your home. A GP can see three or four people in the surgery in the time taken to make one home visit, making it a very poor use of a doctor?s time if a visit is not necessary, and we would therefore request that you come to the surgery if physically possible.

Lack of transport does not necessarily make a patient housebound and is not usually regarded as a justification for a visit.
